Raya Heritage was Chiang Mai's first member of the Leading Hotels of the World, and it earned that on restraint rather than scale — thirty-three suites on the bank of the Mae Ping, each with a generous terrace. The palette is cotton, linen, rattan, clay and pale wood, and almost every piece in it was made by hand by craftspeople from the north.
Craft as the Whole Point
The effect is quieter and more particular than a resort of this price usually is: high ceilings, deep shade, water, and very little ornament. Don Kaeo is about twenty minutes upriver from the old city, and a complimentary shuttle runs in and out through the day.
